Scholarships Now Available for Teen Leadership & Social Entrepreneurship Program at United Nations with Obama Strategist, Arun Gandhi, Harvard Negotoiations Expert
Greenwich, CT – Citing an unemployment rate among youth at over 20% nationally, SuperFutures.org today announced that 30 scholarships are available to help students fund the cost to attend a one-of-a-kind leadership program at the United Nations and Pace University – all designed to help students better prepare for the working world.
““We know more than ever that this is a global world, and the students who will succeed are the ones who will be prepared to compete in a tough job climate,” said Jennifer Openshaw, founder of SuperFutures.org and a nationally known financial commentator who’s appeared on Oprah, CNN, Today and many other programs. “With everyone hurting – parents and students – this is our way of extending a financial helping hand to enable more students to learn how to impact their lives and the lives of others.”
Students will hear from world re-known speakers including Joel Benenson, Obama’s Senior Strategist for his winning campaign; Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and Director of the MK Gandhi Center for Global Non-Violence; Joshua Weiss, Director of the Global Negotiation Project at Harvard University; Yvonne Davis of the Huffington Post; Dean Dorothy Bassett, Head of the School of Leadership and Professional Advancement at Duquesne University; Marc Weiner, host of Nickelodeon's long-running Weinerville, as well as inspirational youth leadership trainers and successful social entrepreneurs.
“Today’s students are the next generation of leaders but we need to equip them now with the tools, skills and real-world experience that will enable them to have an impact,” said Patrick Sciarratta, a SuperFutures' Advisory Board Member and Co-Founder of the six-year-old Youth Assembly Program at the UN. “SuperFutures provides motivated students the chance to turn what they learn into action - into an experience that can make a difference in their college applications, their lives, even in the lives of others.”
The scholarship provides the full eight-day program— with a standard tuition of $2,995 -- for just $795. This includes the dynamic five-day SuperFutures Youth Leadership & Social Entrepreneurship Program held August 8-12 including all meals, accommodations at Pace University, and events. The Leadership Program – featuring workshops, speakers and an exclusive exchange with some 50 Chinese teens -- will teach students to turn their passions and knowledge of global issues into real-world impact by developing their own social entrepreneurial ventures. Students will leave with a Personal Action Plan and video or essay about their experience, which can be used in college or job applications. Students may also attend the three-day Youth Assembly at the United Nations August 5-7, immediately preceding the SuperFutures Leadership Program (with self-provided accommodations).
SuperFutures will offer scholarships based on quality and need to students ages 14-18 in the Tri-State Area or others with self-provided airfare. Students should have an average grade of B or higher, a demonstrated interest in community service or giving back, and financial need. Interested candidates should email their answer by July 17th to the following questions: “Why would I like to participate in the SuperFutures 2009 Program and what do I hope to gain from this experience?” Answers should not exceed 300 words and should be emailed, along with name, phone, age and current school to: apply@superfutures.org.
